Organising my Makeup Brushes.... Major Operation!

My Makeup Brushes are my babies, as sad as it might sound, it's true!
More than just having them for practical reasons (i.e. my job), I would consider myself a collector. I see one I don't have and I immediately want it!!
Anyhow, I hadn't really sorted them out in nearly a year now, since I last moved house, and they were definitely in need of some rejigging.
For the most part I keep my 'own' brushes separate from my 'kit' brushes but I do have to 'cross-contaminate', so-to-say, every now and again for certain jobs, makeup tutorials etc. They were pretty much all mixed up and not in much order. Not something I enjoy!!!
So I pulled every single brush out and made sure each one was squeaky clean... Part 1 done.

I also hadn't counted my brushes in a long time either so today I got a nice round number of 250 on the button! 90 large/face brushes and 160 smaller/eye brushes etc.
That's a LOT of brushes to keep clean, but luckily I'm really good at keeping on top of it!

First I got all the face brushes I like to keep just for my own use and popped them into my Muji acrylic holder, which costs £7.95 and can be purchased from here.
These mostly consist of my Real Techniques brushes (most of which stand alone), My Sigma & Sedona Lace long handled Kabuki brush sets, and all my short handled brushes & stumpy kabuki brushes.

my Muji acrylic holder

The rest of my face brushes I separated into these handy black mesh pen holders (from a local office supply store) until it came to organising them into their brush belt.

For my personal use eye brushes etc, I use another acrylic muji desk pot. This one has 3 partitions and costs only £5.50 from here.
I basically use all the brushes that are too short for my brush belts here, and luckily I have a good selection of great quality brushes to choose from!

All of my 'personal use brushes' organised into their acrylic holders on my makeup desk.
I keep my smaller synthetic & 'duo fibre' brushes their own acrylic pot. (see left of picture above).
My 'kit' brushes organised and divided into their brush belts. I use a Sedona lace zip-up belt for my smaller/eye brushes and a Sigma one for the larger/face brushes... (no longer available from the website)
Whatever brushes I couldn't fit into the brush belt, I store in this Sedona Lace Brush Cup Holder  which is from this brush set.
Until they are needed for a job, I store them in my makeup storage drawer along with the rest of my kit makeup.
My brushes on my makeup desk. I also have the 22 piece Coastal Scents Brush Set and my Sigma Performance Eye Kit stored in an acrylic holder on the desk as I am trialing these out at the minute.

And that was a big chunk of my afternoon today. It's definitely worth the effort afterwards when you're left with a nice, neat work station ready to be messed up again!

Are any of ye as bonkers about organisation as I am??

Anyhow, Will Chat soon my lovelies,
Take Care,

Siobhán.

  1. Do you find it easier to have them sitting out on your desk or put away in a drawer? I think if I had that many brushes, I would tend to reuse the same ones over and over.

    1. I prefer having my everyday ones or personal use ones out on the desk as I'd definitely over look some of them otherwise! Plus I have clients over for bridal trials etc sometimes and it's handy having them there for the job. I always keep my mobile kit brushes in the drawers until I have to travel to a job to keep them germ and dust free!

  2. I'm drooling :D, what a impressive collection. I love collecting them too, and I'm always looking for some new brushes to try out. I love them more then makeup :D.
Love how you organized them on your desk, very handy.
Last year I had around 90 brushes (personal use only) and used just 5-7 all together. I know, that's just crazy. I try to downsize but it so hard to say goodbye to them :D

  5. It takes me ages to clean all of mine too. What do you use to clean yours?

I immediately recognized your CS 22 piece set. I bought it in 2011 right before I broke my dominant arm and gave them a thorough (left-handed) trial. I was pleasantly surprised, especially since I bought them half off on their black Friday sale!!

    1. I constantly keep on top of spot cleaning so there's never a build up of dirt etc. I use the MAC Brush Cleanser. The Coastal Scents brushes are a very pleasant surprise! Never thought they'd be as good as they are! x

  8. Yep, I'm bonkers about organising my brushes too, especialy since my collection has been steadily growing in the last year...Except I think I'm even more bonkers since I don't like keeping them out in the open so that dust doesn't fall on them. Yep, sicko :) You have a beautiful collection! I'm still looking forward to trying out Real Techniques and Sedona Lace :)

  10. So fascinating! I loved seeing all your colourful brushes and the shots of them all organised too. I have a love/hate relationship with washing my brushes; I sort of enjoy the act but seeing all my brushes dirty makes me groan. I have roughly 30 brushes, so nothing like your collection, but it's growing. I definitely get excited about new brushes and have to restrain myself if I already have something like it since it's just for a personal collection. Thanks for sharing I really enjoyed this post.

    1. I have the exact same feeling about my dirty brushes, especially after a big job when there might be 50+ to clean! EEK!! It's so horrible. Though an amazing feeling when they are all sparkling clean after. xx

  11. Oh, this is make up brushes heaven!! I don't own that much but still for personal use I shall not buy anymore (but planning an order @Zoeva and drooling over Real Technique so much :P) - Unfortunately don't have much space to organize them as neatly as you did so I have a few easily reachable that I change from time to time...

  14. I literally started to tingle all over when I saw all of your brushes. Something is very wrong with me.
Do you lay the belts out when you are on a job? I often work on sites where room is very limited and its always a problem fitting all of my makeup and brushes where I can get to them easily. So annoying. I was thinking about just getting a bunch of the cup holders, but they are a bit pricey to get as many as I would need. Especially with how thick the real techniques handles are. Any ideas? Thanks!!
